A comprehensive approach
Orofacial pain is the specialization of Oral Medicine dedicated to the study and treatment of clinical conditions involving pain in the head area, including the face and neck. Within orofacial pain, Craniomandibular Dysfunction (CMD) includes a group of processes that are characterized by pain or functional limitation in the area of the ear, jaw joint (temporomandibular joint, TMJ) and mastication muscles.
It can cause pain, cracks and obstructions that impede normal jawbone functioning for chewing and phonation. Orofacial pain also includes headache symptoms such as migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches and other painful conditions such as Neuralgia, Burning Mouth Syndrome and Atypical Odontalgia. The study and treatment of such problems requires a specialized medical approach and, in some cases, interdisciplinary collaboration between professionals from the areas of Medicine, Odontology, Physiotherapy and Psychology.
